How Does Email Tracking Work?

Email tracking works by embedding an invisible tracking pixel (a tiny image) within the email. When the recipient opens the email, the pixel loads, sending a notification back to the sender.

Email Tracking Features:

  • Open Tracking: Detects when an email has been opened.

  • Click Tracking: Tracks when a recipient clicks on a link in the email.

  • Reply Tracking: Notifies you when a recipient responds to your email.

Why Use Email Tracking?

Email tracking offers multiple benefits, including:

  • Improved Follow-Ups: Know when to follow up with recipients who have opened your email but haven't responded.

  • Better Engagement Insights: Understand which emails get the most attention and adjust your messaging accordingly.

  • Performance Metrics: Analyze email campaigns and improve future communications.

  • Increased Productivity: Focus on leads and conversations that matter most.

How to Enable Email Tracking

Go to Settings → Channels → Email → Email tracking and enable Open Tracking and Click Tracking options.

Be aware of Gmail changes from September 2024
In August and September 2024, Gmail implemented changes affecting email tracking, particularly the use of tracking pixels. Users began reporting warning messages stating, "Images in this message are hidden. This message might be suspicious or spam," accompanied by a prominent "Report spam" button. These warnings are triggered by emails containing tracking pixels or images, especially from senders with low reputations or unknown contacts. However, Gmail has not entirely blocked tracking pixels, their functionality remains, though the associated warnings may impact recipient engagement.

To adapt to these changes, it's advisable to:

  • Disable open tracking: Consider turning off open tracking in your email outreach tools to reduce the likelihood of triggering Gmail's warnings.

  • Remove images from emails: Eliminating images, including logos and signatures, can help prevent emails from being flagged as suspicious.

  • Focus on sender reputation: Maintain good sending practices, such as obtaining proper permissions and ensuring high-quality content, to build and preserve a positive sender reputation.

By implementing these strategies, you can navigate Gmail's updated policies and maintain effective email communication.
